Company History –
Staples was founded by Leo Kahn and Thomas G. Stemberg, who were former rivals in the supermarket industry. The idea for Staples originated in 1985 when founder Thomas Stemberg was working of a business proposal and couldn’t find a ribbon for his printer as the local dealer was closed for the Independence Day Holiday. So, the idea stemmed from the frustration of relying on small stores to get regular and important office supplies.
The first Staples store was opened in Brighton neighborhood of Boston in 1986. In 1996, Staples became a fortune 500 company, having surpassed sales of $3 billion. As of this day, the company has more than 2,000 stores in 26 countries across the globe.
