Company History

It was all started in 1978, when John Mackey and Renee Lawson borrowed money amounting from $45,000 from family and friends to open a small natural food store called Safer Way in Austin, Texas. Two years later, both John and Renee partnered with Craig Weller and Mark Skiles for merging Safer Way with Clarksville Natural Grocery that resulted in the opening of Whole Foods Market on September 20, 1980. Less than a year, the worst flood devastated the city of Austin, where the store’s inventory and equipment was damaged. Whole Foods Market had no insurance back then. Customers, neighbors, staff, creditors, vendors and investors helped in the recovering of the store and reopened after 28days. In 1984, Whole Foods Market began its first expansion in Houston and Dallas then in New Orleans with the purchase of The Whole Food Company in 1988. And in 1989, the company expanded to the West Coast in California. In 2008, Whole Foods opened its Southeast Distribution Center in Braselton, Georgia as its first green distribution center for the company.
