Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. is a private, family-owned regional supermarket chain in the U.S. It was founded in 1916 by brothers Walter Wegman and John Wegman. The company’s headquarters is located in Gates, New York. Wegmans now have 84 stores and still growing in six states in the U.S. The company ranked among the top 10 in Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work for eight consecutive years.

As part of Wegmans commitment to their community, the company supports feeding the hungry where Wegmans cashier asks their customers as they are checking out if they would like to add a small donation to their order wherein they can help local food bank. The company also encourages a healthy eating and promote regular exercises where they set a program called Wegmans Passport to Family Wellness, a program that every family can enjoy together while having the hiking trails along country parks, rivers and canal beds. They also partnered with Driscoll’s to provide a big payout to support families and youth education, where in 1984 they began the Wegmans Employee Scholarship Program that supports more than 24,000 Wegmans employees’ college tuition assistance. Wegmans employees give their support to their community by participating in community projects like cleanup, planting, landscaping or painting.

History

Wegmans started when brothers, Walter and John Wegman learned the food business by working in their parent’s grocery store located in Rochester, New York. They opened the Rochester Fruit & Vegetable Company in 1916, which highlighted the beginning of Wegmans Food Markets. In 1930, they opened their gigantic stores with a cafeteria that seated 300. They introduced refrigerated display windows and vaporized water sprays for keeping all produce good fresh and crispy in 1932. They also run a catering service and cooking school, which is Wegmans Food Institute, they offer their customers guide on food preparation and proper nutrition. Robert Wegmans joins the company in 1937 in which he supervises the task and converted the stores to a self-service format. He became the president of the company in 1950 when his uncle died. As president one of the first things he did was to increase all the salaries of the employees, for he believes that if one company wants to take care of its customers the company should care first on their employees’ needs. The company continues to open more stores from 1955 till 1959 wherein they established their largest supermarket in Ridgemont Plaza. In 1964, Danny Wegman joins the company and Robert Wegman became the chairman in 1969. The company’s store becomes the first in New York State to use checkout systems with scanning. Wegmans opened its first home center in 1973 and also operated copy centers and added flower departments to their supermarkets. In 1983, Wegmans provides an employee scholarship program and pioneered a work-scholarship program for youth in Rochester in 1987. In 1983, the company was included in 100 Best Companies to Work For in America based on pay, benefits and job security. Wegmans was named the number 1 Company to Work for by Fortune Magazine’s list in 2005.

Distribution Center Jobs

The company has 12 distribution centers that are located both in New York and Pennsylvania. All their teams are responsible for giving an accurate and on-time selection, distribution and transportation of products in all their stores every day. Some of the jobs available are as follows:

Team Leader (Supervisor)
You will work with multiple departments/areas within Distribution. You will delegate and communicate with every employee in a positive way to set and achieve individual and department goals.

Warehouse Product Selector
You will be requiring working in any of the following facilities of the warehouse including Frozen foods, fresh foods, grocery and meat or produce. You will ensure that stores receive the items they have ordered.
