Staples was founded by Leo Kahn and Thomas G. Stemberg, who were former rivals in the supermarket industry. The idea for Staples originated in 1985 when founder Thomas Stemberg was working of a business proposal and couldn’t find a ribbon for his printer as the local dealer was closed for the Independence Day Holiday.
